Marist Falls At Home To Siena 13-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team fell to 4-3 in the MAAC Lacrosse League on Wednesday night, losing to Siena 13-7 at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Sophomore attack Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) also scored two goals and had an assist.

Siena (9-5, 7-0 MAAC) dominated Marist in the first quarter, outshooting the Red Foxes 9-6 with six shots on net. Chris Zarins put the Saints ahead 1-0 with 7:48 remaining in the opening quarter with a shot from left of the cage. Shaun Dunn followed with a goal at the 5:06 mark, putting Siena ahead 2-0. Siena goalie Brent Herbst made two saves in the first quarter to keep Marist off the scoreboard. Jordan Loftus scored the Saints' third goal of the quarter with 3:57 remaining, getting an assist from Chris D'Alberti.

After getting shut out in the first quarter, Marist (4-8, 4-3 MAAC) scored first in the second quarter. Zindel got a pass from Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) and put it in the net to make the score 3-1 with 12:12 left in the half. However, Siena responded with a man-up goal from Dunn at the 10:19 mark to put the Saints back up by three, 4-1. The Saints then got goals from Ryan Duggan and Bryan Hale to go ahead 6-1 with 5:39 to go in the quarter. The Red Foxes would get their second goal of the game with 3:09 to go as Guarini got a feed from Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and beat Herbst to make the score 6-2. Siena took a five-goal lead into halftime as Zarins scored his second goal of the game with 21 seconds remaining to go ahead 7-2.

Marist took the momentum from Siena to start the third quarter. Zindel scored his second goal of the game with 13:57 left in the quarter, getting an assist from Guarini, to make the score 7-3. Guarini then scored his 20th goal of the season 49 seconds later, getting a Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) assist to get within three, 7-4. Marist outshot Siena 13-7 in the third quarter and was a perfect 4-for-4 in the clear game. Sharkey got the Red Foxes within two, 7-5, with 30 seconds remaining as he put a Zindel pass into the net. Siena, however, put the lead back up to three with one second left in the third as Matt Leithead scored his lone goal of the game.

For as well as Marist played in the third quarter, Siena was as good in the fourth. The Saints outshot the Red Foxes 10-5 in the final quarter and forced seven Marist turnovers. Dunn and Bryan Neufeld scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter, giving Siena a 10-5 lead with 9:15 left in the game. Walsh scored a man-up goal with 6:20 remaining to get Marist within four, 10-6, but Hale scored seven seconds later to make the score 11-6 and put the game out of reach.

Marist held a slim 32-31 advantage in shots, as well as a 25-23 edge in ground balls. Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) combined for 10 saves as Herbst had 11 for Siena. With the win, Siena clinches the 2009 MAAC regular-season title and top seed in the MAAC Tournament.

The Red Foxes will close out the 2009 regular season on Saturday, April 25 with a 7 p.m. game at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field against Manhattan. Prior to the game, Marist will honor the nine seniors on this season's squad. Marist needs a win to secure a spot in the upcoming MAAC Tournament.
