POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team closed the 2009 season with a 10-9 loss to Manhattan at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field Saturday night. The loss knocked the Red Foxes out of contention for the MAAC Lacrosse League tournament. Senior midfield Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) closed his career with a career-high four goals. Marist finishes the season with a 4-9 record, and a 4-4 mark in the MAAC Lacrosse League.
Manhattan (9-7, 5-3 MAAC) opened the scoring as James Synowiez put a Tyler Sabens pass into the back of the net with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter. Marist took control of the first quarter, outshooting the Jaspers 9-6. The Red Foxes tied the game at 1-1 with a Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) goal at the 1:23 mark, assisted by Mike McLachlan (Norwalk, Conn.). Marist then took the lead with 15 seconds left in the quarter on Santavicca's first goal.
Santavicca then scored his second goal of the game to open the second quarter, putting in a man-up goal with 13:53 remaining in the second quarter, making the score 3-1. After Joe Variano scored for Manhattan to make the score 3-2, the Red Foxes got three straight goals from Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.), Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), and Ryan Sharkey (West Fied, N.J.) to put Marist ahead 6-2 with 5:06 left in the half. Manhattan, however, would come back. Kelly Mahon started the rally for the Jaspers with a man-up goal at the 4:18 mark. Sal Perrotto then scored with 2:41 remaining in the half to make the score 6-4. Manhattan eventually tied the game at 6-6 before halftime as James Synowiez scored with 1:19 left in the half.
Manhattan took the lead early in the third quarter as Synowiez scored his third goal of the game with 13:38 left in the quarter, making the score 7-6. Marist tied the game at 7-7 as Santavicca scored his third goal of the game at the 12:41 mark. The Jaspers responded with a Brett Miranda goal with 10:44 left in the third quarter to give Manhattan an 8-7 lead. Although Marist won three of the four face-offs in the period, Manhattan outshot the Red Foxes 11-4 and forced seven Marist turnovers in the third quarter. The Jaspers added two more goals to start the fourth quarter to go ahead 10-7 with 13:27 left in the game. Marist outshot the Jaspers 8-6 in the final period, but could only come up with two more goals the rest of the way.
The Jaspers outshot Marist 37-28 and held a 30-22 advantage in ground balls. Marist senior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had 13 saves in his final game at Marist. The Red Foxes honored ten players on the team who played their last regular season game prior to Saturday night's contest.
