TOLEDO, OHIO - The Marist volleyball team moved to 0-2 on the season Saturday morning with a 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 20-25) defeat to the Toledo Rockets at Savage Arena. The Red Foxes held leads in both the second and third sets but could not hold on for the win in either. Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin,Texas) led Marist with 11 kills, putting her over 1,200 kills for her career.
The first set started close with ties at 1-1, 3-3, 5-5, and 7-7. Toledo then went on the first real run of the set, getting kills from Amber DeWeerdt and Stephanie Kersting as well as an ace from DeWeerdt to go ahead 10-7. The Red Foxes, however, got back to within one at 10-9 on a Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) kill and a Rocket error. After a Foss service error made the score 11-9, Toledo scored the next seven points to go ahead 18-9. Marist only got as close as seven the rest of the set as Toledo took the first 25-15.
Marist (0-2) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second set, taking advantage of two miscues by the Rockets. The lead grew to four at 7-3 on a kill by Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) to take a 12-6 lead. The Rockets came storming back, winning six of the next seven points to get within one, 13-12. Marist got the lead back up to three, 19-16, taking advantage of four Toledo hitting errors. However, the Rockets would right the ship. A DeWeerdt kill put Toledo within two, 19-17, and the Rockets got two more kills to tie the set at 19-19. With the set tied at 21-21, Toledo took the lead on a Sarah Wilson kill. The Rockets won the second set 25-22 on a kill by Bailey Blank.
Just like the set prior, the third set saw much point-trading. Toledo would be the team to try and pull away. Trailing 10-9, the Rockets got a kill from Sondra Parys to tie the set at 10-10. Wilson followed with two blocks and a kill to put Toledo ahead 13-10. Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) ace and Schmid kill. The Rockets came back with a 9-1 run, capped by a Margot Joniec kill, to go ahead 22-16 and essentially put away the match. Marist got as close as five points late, but a Parys kill clinched the match for Toledo, 25-20.
Toledo (2-0) outhit Marist .227-.129 and held a 72-54 advantage in digs. DeWeerdt led the Rockets with 19 kills and 16 digs, hitting .417. Setter Kassie Kadera had a double-double as well with 44 assists and 12 digs.
Marist wraps up play in the Staybridge Suites Rocket Classic at 5 p.m. Saturday against Bryant.
