POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team rallied back from two sets down against Loyola to force a fifth set at the McCann Center Sunday afternoon, only to drop the fifth set 15-13 and the match 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, 13-15). Senior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led the Red Foxes with 19 kills, hitting .378.
Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had 12 kills and a match-high five service aces. Sophomore middle blocker Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had a match-high 50 assists.
Loyola (6-9, 1-1 MAAC) controlled the first set early. The Greyhounds led 9-6 when a Kathryn Dircks kill sparked a 3-0 run for Loyola and a 12-6 lead. After a Dircks service error made the score 12-7, a Lindsey O'Dell (Kingwood, Texas) kill and Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) ace highlighted a five-point run that got the Red Foxes within one point at 12-11. Marist eventually tied the set at 16-16 on a Loyola error, then took a 17-16 lead on a Foss kill. Loyola tied the set at 19-19 on a Dircks kill. The Greyhounds then compounded a Marist error with a Dircks service ace to go ahead 21-19. Loyola would keep the lead at two until 24-22, when Taylor Koncelik put down her second kill of the set to give the Greyhounds a 25-22 win in the first.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 9-5 lead in the second set, getting kills from Dircks, Aubrey Kirven, and Nina Camaioni along the way. Marist closed to within two at 9-7 on a Schultze kill, and again at 12-10 on a kill by O'Dell. Loyola then won the next three points to go ahead by five, 15-10. The Greyhounds led by as much as four near the end of the set, as a Camaioni kill gave Loyola a 22-18 lead. Marist then got two kills from Foss and a kill by Leeann Harridsleff (Simi Valley, Calif.) to get within one at 22-21. Loyola would not be deterred, winning three of the last four points to win the second set 25-22 and go ahead two sets to none. The Greyhounds hit .444 in the second set with no errors.
Marist (7-6, 1-1 MAAC) fell behind 8-3 early in the third, but rallied back on kills by Foss and Schultze to get within two, 9-7. A Red Fox error was the catalyst for a 4-0 Loyola run. A block by Camaioni and Karlee Woodward capped the run, putting the Greyhounds ahead 13-7. Loyola led 18-12 when Marist made its run back into the match. A Foss kill and a block by Burton and Schultze led Marist on an 8-2 run to tie the set at 20-20. With the set tied at 21-21, the Red Foxes took their first lead of the set at 22-21 on a Loyola error. Marist then went up by two, 23-21, on a block by Schmid and Harridsleff. Schmid gave the Red Foxes set point with a kill to make the score 24-22. Marist won the set 25-22 on a Loyola error.
The Red Foxes jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead in the fourth set, getting kills by Schultze and Harridsleff as well as a block by Burton and Foss. Loyola got within three at 9-6 on a Woodward kill. Schultze answered with a kill of her own to make the score 10-6. Marist then scored five straight points off of Stoiberg's serve to take a 15-6 lead. A Harridsleff kill put the Red Foxes ahead by 10, 18-8. Marist hit .370 in the fourth set and held Loyola to a .062 mark. The Red Foxes grew their lead to twelve at 23-11 on a block by Burton and Jan and a Foss ace. Schmid clinched the fourth set for Marist, as her third kill of the set gave the Red Foxes a 25-13 win.
Loyola got out to a hot start in the deciding fifth set, as two Camaioni kills and a Kirven ace gave the Greyhounds a 5-1 lead. A Harridsleff kill broke Loyola's serve and made the score 5-2. Schmid then hit back-to-back aces to put the score at 5-4. The Red Foxes then tied the set at 5-5 on a block by Burton and Foss. The two teams played to an 8-8 tie, when a block by Kirven and Woodward gave Loyola a 9-8 lead. A Marist error then put the Greyhounds ahead 10-8. Loyola went ahead 12-10 when kills by Schmid and Foss tied the set at 12-12. Marist then took a 13-12 lead on a Greyhounds error. Loyola tied the set at 13-13, then won the set 15-13 on a Camaioni service ace and Marist error.
The Greyhounds hit .287 for the match, including a .500 mark in the deciding fifth set. Marist hit .279 for the match, but hit only .214 in the fifth set. The Red Foxes held a 45-38 advantage in digs as each team had seven blocks. Camaioni led Loyola and all players with 25 kills as Dircks added 14 kills. Woodward led Loyola with five blocks.
Marist wraps up its three-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 25 as the Red Foxes host the Fairfield Stags. First serve at the McCann Center is set for 7 p.m.
