NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore Adam Vess (Cromwall, Conn.) of the Marist men's indoor track and field team won the seeded mile at the Gotham Cup in the NYC Armory on Friday. Vess, the school record holder in the event, qualified for the IC4A Championship with a time of 4:10.66. In addition to his qualification, seven other runners ran personal best times.
Vess finished the race with a final 400-meter split of 59.3 seconds. Last week, he helped the distance medley relay qualify for the IC4A Championships as he came from behind to win the event at the NYU Metro Collegiate Coaches Invitational.
Seven other runners posted personal best times on the day. In the unseeded mile juniors Timothy Keegan (Huntington, N.Y.) and Zak Smetana (Niskayuna, N.Y.) notched final times of 4:28.53 and 4:30.47 respectively. Freshman Phillip Krupka (Allentown, Pa.) ran to a time of 52.83 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore Joshua Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Dan Conklin (Norwalk, Conn.) posted their top finishes in the 500-meter dash. Lopez ran to a mark of 1:09.83, while Conklin dashed to a time of 1:10.00. Freshman Matt Panebianco (Tappan, N.Y.) ran to a personal best 2:01.26 in the 800-meter run and sophomore William Griffin (Columbia, Conn.) ran his top time in the 3,000-meter run with a final time of 8:41.24.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Princeton Relays.
