NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Marist men's indoor track and field team stormed in to 2010 with a strong showing at the NYU Metro Collegiate Coaches Invitational at the NYC Armory on Friday. The distance medley team comprised of sophomore Will Griffin (Columbia, Conn.), senior Matt Janczyk (Bristol, Conn.), sophomore Adam Vess (Cromwall, Conn.), and junior John Kristie (Wantagh, N.Y.) qualified for the IC4A Championship in the event as they captured first place with a time of 10:10.22.
Senior Max Carow (Fanwood, N.J.) nearly broke his own record in the pole vault with a jump of 4.2 meters (13 feet, 9.25 inches). His record, which was set last winter still stands at 4.26 meters.
In the distance medley relay, Vess trailed the leader by about 30 meters when he was handed the baton. He made up the gap during his 1,600-meter split, which he finished with a mark of 4:09.7. Griffin ran the 1,200-meter leg with a split of 3:10.0, Janczyk ran to a mark of 1:57.9 in the 800-meter leg and Kristie ran the 400-meter leg with a time of 52.3 seconds.
In the 4x800-meter relay, the foursome of David Raucci, Vess, Matt Flint (Queensbury, N.Y.), and Conor Shelley (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) finished second overall with a time of 8:01.17.
The Marist track & field programs will return to action on Friday, Jan. 15 at the NYC Armory. The Red Foxes will race in the NYC Gotham Cup.
