POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Junior Krystian Witkowski (Rochester, N.Y.) of the Marist men's soccer team totaled five points, behind two goals and an assist, as the Red Foxes netted a 3-0 win over Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Sunday at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The win lifted Marist back to .500 overall with a 7-7 record and snapped a two-match losing streak.
Senior goalkeeper Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) made three saves in the match and posted his fourth clean sheet of the year. Additionally sophomore Anthony Rozmus (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and junior Alex George (Southold, N.Y.) notched a goal and assist, respectively.
Witkowski opened the scoring for Marist (7-7, 2-3 MAAC) in the 34th minute, as he scored his fifth goal of the year. After he received a pass at the top of the 18-yard box from George, Witkowski turned and put a shot on the ground to the near post and beat Jaspers' goalkeeper Christopher Lands. The Red Foxes took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 79th minute, Rozmus extended the Marist lead to two goals. He finished a cross from Witkowski off his toes on a full extension dive to put the ball into the back of the net. It was the first goal of Rozmus' Marist career. Witkowski converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, after junior Lucas Szabo (Bethesda, Md.) was fouled in the box.
In the match Marist held a dominant 22-9 advantage in shots and an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. The Red Foxes also took five corner kicks.
For the season, the Red Foxes improved to 6-0 when they score first and 5-0 when they have a lead at halftime.
Marist will return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. for a MAAC match with the Rider Broncs. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
