Bolstad Wins 3-Meter Diving Event, Marist In Third Place After Day One Of MAAC Championships

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist men's swimming and diving team stands in third place after the first day of the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship at the Mangione Aquatic Center on the campus of Loyola University Maryland. Junior Brian Bolstad (Highland, N.Y.) totaled 350 points in 3-meter diving to win the event in the first-ever six dive format, which resulted in a MAAC record.

Senior Mitchell Katz (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) finished fifth overall off the 3-meter board. He totaled 282.05 points in his six dives.

Marist opened the first night of the championship with a third place finish in the 200-yd. freestyle relay. Freshman Charlie Pataffi (Middletown, N.J.), junior Steven Vendetta (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Keith Miller (Missoula, Mont.) and junior Joshua Sklanka (Watertown, Conn.) tallied a third place finish with a time of 1:24.36.

Vendetta continued the night with a third place finish in the 500-yd. freestyle relay with a time of 4:39.17. Freshman Stephen Miller (Downington, Pa.) came in sixth with a time of 4:40.75.

In the 200-yd. individual medley, sophomore Kevin Shoemaker (Saucon Valley, Pa.) finished eighth overall with a time of 1:56.16. He scored 11 points for the Red Foxes in the event.

The Red Foxes placed three in the top 16 spots in the men's 50-yd. freestyle. Pataffi finished ninth and won the `B' Final heat with a time of 21.16 seconds. Sklanka and Keith Miller finished 14th (21.74 seconds) and 15th (21.84 seconds), respectively.

After the first day of the championship, Loyola leads the way with 209.5 points. Rider sits close behind in second with 205 points and Marist is in third place with 167 points.

The 2010 MAAC Championship will continue on Friday morning at 9:30 a.m., with the qualifying heats of events 17-26. The finals for the same events will be held Friday evening, with the first race scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
