ITHACA, N.Y. - In its first official dual match of the spring season, the Marist men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the Cornell Big Red on the road on Saturday afternoon. In the match, the Red Foxes won the doubles point for the first time under head coach Tim Smith as the team took wins at second and third doubles.
Freshman Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) teamed up with junior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) at second doubles. The pair defeated Mirza Klis and Jonathan Jaklitsch, 8-6. At third doubles, junior Landon Greene (Palos Verde, Calif.) and senior Loic Sessagesimi (Blonay, Switzerland) prevailed over Jonathan Fife and Ashish Bhandari, 8-5.
Van Eck captured Marist lone singles win on the afternoon at the third spot in the lineup. He bested Jeremy Feldman 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) fell to Andy Gauthier in three sets at the top singles spot. The final score was 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Coley is ranked 20th, while Gauthier is 11th in the ITA Northeast Region.
Marist will be back in action on Sunday morning as it takes on Binghamton at 9:30 a.m., in Ithaca, N.Y.
