PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Trailing 10-7 late in the fourth quarter at Rutgers Tuesday night, the Marist men's lacrosse team got goals from Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) in the last 1:07 but the comeback fell short. The Red Foxes fell 10-9, their second consecutive loss. Rice led Marist with three goals and also had an assist.
Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) had 10 saves in net for Marist.
Marist (3-2) took an early 1-0 lead as Rice found the back of the net at the 11:27 mark of the opening quarter. Rutgers (4-1) responded with goals from Kory Kelly and Tad Stanwick to take a 2-1 lead with 4:50 remaining in the first. Zindel tied the game 2-2 with 1:42 to go in the quarter, putting a Rice pass in the net. The Scarlet Knights took the lead back with four seconds left in the first, as Justin Pennington found Gerhard Buehning who put Rutgers ahead 3-2 after the first quarter.
Rice tied the game up for the Red Foxes 29 seconds into the second quarter, as his man-up goal from Zindel made the score 3-3. Rutgers then shut down Marist for the remainder of the half. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Red Foxes 13-3 in the second quarter. Kelly scored back-to-back goals to put the Scarlet Knights ahead 5-3 with 10:22 to go in the first half. Buehning then added his second goal of the game, with an assist from Kelly, with 5:38 to go, giving Rutgers a 6-3 lead that the home team held till halftime.
After a slow start to the third quarter, Marist got on the board with 9:13 to go on a man-up goal from Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) which made the score 6-4. Teichmann then scored at the 6:29 mark of the third to get the Red Foxes within one, 6-5. Zindel tied the game, 6-6, with a man-up goal with 4:12 remaining in the quarter. Rutgers took the lead back with 1:50 to go in the third on Kelly's fourth goal of the game. Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) then found the back of the net with 18 seconds left in the quarter to tie the game 7-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Rutgers outshot Marist 8-0 in the first 9:17 of the fourth quarter before Kelly put in his fifth goal of the game, putting the Scarlet Knights ahead 8-7 with 5:43 to go. Justin Pennington then scored 21 seconds later to give Rutgers a 9-7 lead. Kelly then scored with 4:14 remaining in the game to make the score 10-7. Marist came back with Teichmann's second goal of the game at the 1:07 mark of the quarter, making the score 10-8. The Red Foxes then won the ensuing faceoff, with Rice scoring with 20 seconds left to get Marist within one, 10-9. Rutgers then won the faceoff and held on to the ball, winning 10-9.
The Scarlet Knights outshot Marist 34-23, 11-4 in the fourth quarter. Rutgers also held a 30-22 advantage in ground balls. Kelly led the Scarlet Knights with seven points, adding an assist to his six goals. Rudy Butler made five saves for Rutgers, while Andrew D'Agostino had a team-high seven ground balls.
Marist will open MAAC Lacrosse League play Saturday at Virginia Military Institute. Opening faceoff at Foster Stadium is at 1 p.m.
