LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Marist men's tennis team won eight of nine matches including all six singles contests in a 7-0 shutout victory over Rider in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Thursday afternoon. The win improved the Red Foxes record to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
No singles player needed more than 18 games to finish off a match as all six Red Foxes won in straight sets. Senior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) netted the largest margins of victory on the day. Sessagesimi won his second singles match over Ryan Carpenter 6-1, 6-1, while von Nordheim defeated Marc Ashed at third singles by the same score.
At fifth sophomore Michael Land (Kingwood, Texas) rebounded from a loss on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Robert Olsen. Land played sixth singles for the Red Foxes.
Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) won at the top spot in the lineup. His score was 6-3, 6-3 over Will Haight of Rider. Junior Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) rounded out the singles victories with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Chris Esposito at fourth singles. The win for Hobbs was his fifth in a row.
In doubles, the Red Foxes captured the point with wins at first and second doubles. Coley paired with Hobbs at the top spot for an 8-2 victory over Haight and Ashed. At second doubles Sessagesimi and von Nordheim bested Matt DeMartino and Ryan Carpenter 8-2.
Marist will return to the courts on Sunday, March 28 at noon in its home opener. The Red Foxes will play host to St. John's of the BIG EAST at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
