POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind five strong singles victories and two doubles wins, the Marist men's tennis team grew its winning streak to four as it defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles 6-1 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match on Saturday morning. The contest was held at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion and four Red Foxes powered their ways to straight set singles victories.
Marist won the doubles point for the fourth straight match, a stretch as long as it's winning streak. The Red Foxes earned victories at the second and third spots in the lineup to notch the point for the team. Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) netted a third doubles win over Joseph Zellic and Brandon Gallegos, 8-4.
Sessegesimi and junior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) both lost just two games apiece in their second and sixth singles matches respectively. Sessagesimi defeated Matt Kane, 6-2, 6-0, while Greene coasted by Blair, 6-1, 6-1.
At fifth singles, Himmelsbach lengthened his team-best winning streak to five matches as he bested Sarrasin 6-1, 6-2. Himmelsbach's match was the first to be completed of the six singles matches on the day.
Junior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Van Eck each notched singles victories as well. Pisecky beat Gallegos 6-3, 6-3 at third singles, while Van Eck won a marathon match against Zellic at fourth singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0.
Marist moves to 7-5 overall and 4-0 in the MAAC with the win; Niagara is now 8-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
With a quick turnaround, the Marist men's tennis team will return to action on Sunday, April 11 at 10 a.m. The Red Foxes will host the Colgate Raiders in a dual match at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
