POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team posted its fourth shutout of the season as it blanked Colgate 7-0 at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Sunday. The Red Foxes won eight of nine matches including all six singles contests. Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) gutted out thrilling three set victory where each of the sets went to a tiebreak.
Coley defeated Michael Yassky 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-0) to win at first singles match, the only contest that went the distance on the day. The win was his 17th of the season as he improved to 8-7 in dual matches during his senior season.
The rest of the singles lineup posted straight set victories, highlighted by senior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) also notched a shutout in a set. He bested Connor Feuille, 6-0, 6-4.
Junior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland), sophomore Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) posted wins for Marist at third, fourth and fifth singles respectively. Himmelsbach has the team's longest winning streak. He has won his last five singles matches for the Red Foxes.
The doubles point came down to the matchup at first doubles between Greene and Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) and Yassky and Nogueras. The pair from Marist prevailed 8-6 and won the match behind an ace from Greene. The second doubles victory came from Coley and Himmelsbach who have won four straight. The tandem defeated Phil Bernasek and Ruslan Goussiatnikov 8-6.
Marist will conclude a four-match homestand on Senior Day when the Red Foxes host Fairfield in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) dual match on Tuesday, April 13. First serves are scheduled for 3 p.m. Marist will attempt to "Pack The Courts" at the match as it takes on the 2009 MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield Stags at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
