VESTAL, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 13-10 loss at Binghamton in a non-conference game on Tuesday. The Red Foxes trailed by 10 runs after three innings and fought back to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to draw any closer.
Freshman right fielder John Prano (Oviedo, Fla.), red-shirt junior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore infielder/outfielder Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) had two hits apiece. Prano added two RBIs as he extended his hitting streak to 11.
Binghamton got off to a hot start, as the Bearcats led 12-2 after three innings by scoring three runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third. Center fielder Henry Dunn was the primary catalyst for the Bearcats, as he homered, tripled and singled in his first three at-bats while driving in four runs.
The Red Foxes clawed their way back by scoring five times in the fifth. An RBI single by sophomore catcher Ben Luderer (River Vale, N.J.) made the score 12-3, and a two-run single by Prano made it 12-5. Stuckey then stole third base, and came in to score when the throw to third went into left field to make it 12-6. Shank followed by hitting ball that resulted in an error, which brought in Prano for the Red Foxes' fifth run of the inning.
A solo home run by Binghamton's John Miele in the sixth put the Bearcats up 13-7. In the seventh, the Red Foxes inched closer by scoring three times. Stuckey led the inning off with a double, and scored on a one-out single by Shank to cut Marist's deficit to five. A single by freshman first baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Shank, making the score 13-9. Nugent then followed with an RBI single to plate Orefice.
In the eighth, singles by pinch-hitter Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Prano gave the Red Foxes runners on first and second with one out. However, a double play ended that threat, and Marist went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.
Junior right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) started and took the loss for Marist, falling to 2-4. Binghamton starter Zach Juliano earned the victory to improve to 2-0, and Morgan Smith pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save of the season.
For Binghamton, Dunn finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. The Bearcats outhit the Red Foxes 18-15, with first baseman Dave Ciocchi and designated hitter Jeff Skelhorne-Gross getting three hits apiece.
Marist fell to 22-13 overall; Binghamton improved to 13-17.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Wednesday, when they start a four-game homestand by hosting Hartford in a non-conference at McCann Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., a change from the originally scheduled time of 3 p.m.
