POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In a battle of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Patriot League championship top seeds, Marist blanked Army 7-0 at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday afternoon. The win marked the fifth straight shutout for the Red Foxes in 10 days and just the second victory over the Black Knights in a dual match in program history. Seniors Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) all won 6-2, 6-2 in their respective singles matches.
Coley defeated Chris Albornoz, Sessagesimi took down Johnny Lucero and Greene bested Bruno Lucivero. Coley played first singles, Sessagesimi at second and Greene at the fifth spot in the lineup.
Sophomore Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) won his team-leading 24th match of the season on Wednesday as he cruised past Rashad Shelton 6-2, 6-1. The fourth singles match between Himmelsbach and Shelton was the first completed on the day.
At sixth singles, junior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Alex Holland. Classmate Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) rounded out the singles wins with a triumph over Tripp Johnson at third singles. The final score was 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
The Red Foxes won two of three doubles matches contested as well. After Sessagesimi and Pisecky got by Donald Van Velzer and Johnson, 8-3, the Black Knights pulled even with a second doubles victory by Albornoz and Lucero. Greene and freshman Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) secured the doubles point with a 9-8 (7-4) win at first doubles over Gary Kushnirovich and Dan Shaffer. When Marist was up 6-4 in the tiebreak, Van Eck sent a second serve out wide in the deuce court that was not returned by Army.
With the win, the team equaled its win total from the 2008-09 season with 12 victories.
Marist will return to the courts in search of its eighth MAAC Tournament Championship and third in a row at the 2010 conference championship. The Red Foxes will open play on Saturday, April 24 at 9 a.m. against the winner of Loyola and Niagara.
