EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its All-MAAC men's tennis awards on Thursday morning, with Marist earning several selections. The Red Foxes took home one major award as director of tennis
Nathaniel Horner was named MAAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.
The MAAC also announced its All-Academic Team, honoring six Red Foxes.
Graduate student
Jose Catala earned All-MAAC Singles First Team recognition, while freshman
Alejandro Abella Fernandez and sophomore
Anirudh Nallaparaju were named to the Second Team. Sophomore
Ian Layton was selected to the Third Team.
Senior
Nick Suhanitski and junior
Thomas Bevan were named to the All-MAAC Doubles First Team.
Horner, in his second season at the helm, led Marist to a regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the MAAC Championships. He guided the Red Foxes to a 14-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. This marked the 12th time in program history that Marist went undefeated in MAAC play and the first since 2013-14. The 14 wins are the program's most in a season since 2016-17, and the Red Foxes posted the highest winning percentage in the MAAC (.737). Marist also enters the postseason riding an eight-match winning streak.
- Catala was named to the First Team after playing the majority of his matches at No. 1 singles. He recorded nine wins in dual matches and posted a 13-7 overall record, earning MAAC Player of the Week honors once.
- Abella Fernandez earned Second Team honors after recording 11 wins in dual matches and posting a 16-8 overall record.
- Nallaparaju also secured Second Team recognition with nine wins in dual matches and an 11-5 overall record.
- Layton was selected to the Third Team after recording six wins in dual matches and posting a 13-7 overall record. He also earned MAAC Player of the Week honors once.
- Bevan and Suhanitski earned First Team recognition after posting a 13-3 record in dual matches and a 14-4 overall mark.
Six student-athletes received a spot on the MAAC All-Academic Team. Student-athletes must complete two semesters at their institution while holding a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.
