Marist Suffers First Conference Defeat Of 2010, Losing At Siena 14-4

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Marist trailed 6-0 with 1:11 to go in the second quarter before finally getting on the scoreboard Wednesday afternoon at Siena Turf Field, as the Saints beat the Red Foxes 14-4 in a battle of MAAC Lacrosse League unbeatens. Freshman attack Kyle Reny (Marblehead, Mass.) adding a late goal in the fourth quarter.

Marist's (7-4, 4-1 MAAC) four goals were its lowest scoring output since scoring four goals at Holy Cross on April 11, 2009. Siena (8-4, 5-0 MAAC) outshot the Red Foxes 12-3 in the first quarter, with Marist committing five turnovers. John Rogener opened the scoring with a goal at the 12:34 mark of the first quarter. Jordan Loftus and Ryan Duggan also scored in the first quarter for Siena, which led 3-0 after the first quarter.

The Saints got two quick goals to start the second quarter, before Kyle Curry scored with 2:32 remianing in the half to put Siena ahead 6-0. Rice then scored Marist's first goal of the game with 1:11 left in the quarter to make the score 6-1. Siena scored two goals in the final minute to take an 8-1 halftime lead. Marist outshot Siena 20-10 in the second half and won nine of 11 faceoffs, but the Saints continued to pour it on. Siena scored three goals in both the third and fourth quarters for the 14-4 win.

The Saints outshot Marist 33-31. Marist held a 15-7 advantage in faceoffs and 35-25 edge in ground balls. Senior midfield Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) was 10-for-15 in faceoffs with Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) going 5-for-7. Francis also had a team-high seven ground balls. Loftus led Siena with four goals, as Rogener and Duggan added hat tricks. Brent Herbst made 15 saves in goal for the Saints.

Marist concludes the road portion of its 2010 schedule on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Detroit. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Red Foxes and Detroit, who is in its inaugural year in the MAAC Lacrosse League.
