PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Matthew Flint (Queensbury, N.Y.) and freshman Arquimedes DelaCruz (Wantagh, N.Y.) of the Marist men's track and field team each set personal-best times in their respective events at the Penn Relays late Thursday.
Competing in the college men's 5,000-meter run, Flint placed 12th out of 41 in a time of 14:37.43, which was 1.34 seconds faster than his previous best time at the Bison Outdoor Classic two weeks ago. Flint's placement was the highest by any Red Foxes in the 5,000 meters at the Penn Relays in school history. The previous best finish was 18th, accomplished by Mike Melfi in 1998.
DelaCruz ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:25.28, which enabled him to finish 13th overall and was .62 seconds faster than his time at the Sam Howell Invitational three weeks ago. DelaCruz has already qualified for the USA Track & Field Junior National Championships in the steeplechase and the 5,000 meters.
Senior captain Matthew Janczyk (Bristol, Conn.) also competed in the steeplechase, and completed it in 9:56.10.
Marist will continue competition in the Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday.
