POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The defense recorded a 62-48 victory over the offense in the Marist football program's annual Spring Game, held at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday night. A point system which rewarded scoring plays and big plays was utilized instead of the traditional Red vs. White format the program has used in past years.
"I thought both sides made impact plays," Head Coach Jim Parady said. "We definitely had guys move up the depth chart with their performances in a game situation."
The defense scored the first nine points of the game, but the offense roared back to take a 31-17 lead in the second quarter. From there, the defense scored 27 unanswered points to take the lead for good.
A crowd estimated at approximately 1,000 fans attended the game. Prior to it, an alumni flag football featured 25 Marist football alums was held, which included former players who graduated between the early 1990s and last year.
"The one comment you hear from them," Parady said, "is the progress the program has made."
The Marist football team will start its 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3, when the Red Foxes host Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. The Red Foxes will be in their second season as a member of the Pioneer Football League (PFL) this coming year. Last season, Marist tied a program record with seven victories, finishing 7-4 overall and 5-3 in PFL play.
