POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Behind a three-set victory by junior Landon Greene (Palos Verde, Calif.), the Marist men's tennis team squeaked past St. John's 4-3 in a dual match at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday. Greene defeated Martin Kosut 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 at sixth singles to secure the victory. Senior Christian Coley (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) notched singles wins as well for the Red Foxes.
Coley battled to a straight set victory over Milo Hauk, a 2009 ITA championship Round of 16 player. Coley took the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5). In the second set, Coley led 4-1 before Hauk rattled off three straight games to knot the score at four. Coley then won the next two games, behind a break and a hold to win the second set 6-4 and take the match. The contest was contested for the first singles point.
Himmelsbach crusied to the quickest singles victory on the afternoon for the Red Foxes. At fifth singles, he defeated Stefan Bojic 6-2, 6-1.
The Red Foxes also swept the doubles point in the victory. Coley and Himmelsbach teamed up at second doubles to defeat Kosut and Pavel Cerny 8-3. Junior Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) and Greene won at the top spot in the doubles lineup by an identical 8-3 score. Hobbs and Greene defeated Hauk and Asaf Honig. At third doubles senior Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) defeated Mike Lampa and Derek Wallensteen 8-6.
"Any time you beat a BIG EAST opponent it is an exciting win for the program," head coach Tim Smith said after the match. "I am extremely proud of the different players who stepped up today for us."
Marist has won its last three matches and picked up its first win against a BIG EAST opponent since April 8, 2008, when it defeated Connecticut 6-1. The Red Foxes are now 6-5 this season.
The Red Foxes continue a four-match homestand on Saturday, April 10 when they host Niagara in a Metro Atlantic Atheltic Conference (MAAC) match. The contest is scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m. at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
