Segni Concludes Brilliant Marist Career At IC4A Championships

May 15, 2010

PRINCETON, N.J. - Graduate student Girma Segni (Bronx, N.Y.) of the Marist men's track and field team competed in his final collegiate race on Friday at the IC4A Championships, held at Princeton University. Segni ran the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:49.21, which put him in 27th place.

Segni's Marist career ends as the most decorated long-distance runner in the long and storied history of distance running at the school, dating back to 1963, when the first men's cross country team was fielded. He was named Marist Sportsperson of the Year in 2009.

In track, Segni owns every major distance record -- indoor 5,000 (14:18), outdoor 5,000 (14:32.65) and outdoor 10,000 (30:08.28), the latter of which was set this season at Bucknell. In addition, he has scored in every conference championship in which he has competed. Most recently, he was second at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Championship at 10,000 meters.

In cross country, he owns the school record at Van Cortlandt Park on the famed 5-mile course (25:01.4), the only course that every generation of Marist cross country has competed on. In addition, he owns five of the top 10 times ever recorded on the course. He led the team to four consecutive runner-up positions to nationally-ranked Iona, and was an All-MAAC runner in each of his four seasons. He also led the team to a program-best 10th-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Regionals.
