WEST POINT, N.Y. - Sophomore Chelsea Botta (East Longmeadow, Mass.) of the Marist women's soccer team notched her first collegiate goal in the Red Foxes 1-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast University on Sunday at the Black Knight Classic, hosted by Army. Marist earned its second win of the season, both of which have been 1-0 shutouts.
The Red Foxes goalkeeper, senior Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.), earned her second clean sheet of the season. She made seven saves in the match.
Marist (2-4) pressed from the start of the contest, as the team had two corner kick opportunities in the first 2:11 of the match. On the second chance, freshman Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) found Botta in the box. Botta finished the play to the near post. The lone tally of the match came in the third minute.
Balzarini kept Florida Gulf Coast off the board in the 59th minute when she made a pair of saves on shots by Jess Swartzentruber and Katie Donnellan. Lindsay Haw took a third shot, but it sailed high to end the Eagles' threat.
In the match, Marist was outshot 20-11, but only put one less shot on goal than the Eagles. FGCU had seven shots on goal to the Red Foxes' six. Additionally, Florida Gulf Coast held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Red Foxes will return to the field on Friday, Sept. 17 as the team continues a four-match road trip at Lehigh. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
