Marist's Terrence Turner Named National Semifinalist For William V. Campbell Trophy

Sept. 30, 2010

DALLAS - Senior nose tackle Terrence Turner (Brooklyn, N.Y.) of the Marist football team has been named a national semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, endowed by HealthSouth and formerly known as the Draddy Trophy. The semifinalists are also candidates for the 2010 National Football Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete Awards.

"This year's Campbell Trophy semifinalists embody the National Football Foundation's mission of building leaders through football," said NFF Chairman Archie Manning, in a press release distributed by the NFF. Manning's sons Peyton (1997 Campbell Trophy winner) and Eli were named NFF National Scholar-Athletes in 1997 and 2003, respectively. "They are standouts in the classroom and on the field and have become leaders in their respective communities. Each school should take great pride in being represented by such well-rounded young men who will undoubtedly go on to do great things in life."

Schools are limited to one nomination each for this award. Nominees must either be a senior or graduate student in his final year of eligibility, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a starter or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The trophy was renamed last fall in honor of Bill Campbell, the chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipient of the NFF's Gold Medal.

A fifth-year senior, Turner began his Marist career on the offensive line before shifting to nose tackle in the 2008 season. He has been the Red Foxes' primary starter at the position for the last three years, and was named Honorable Mention All-Pioneer Football League (PFL) in 2009. Academically, Turner was named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-District and a Football Championship Subdivision Academic All-Star last season. He also was accepted into the summer undergraduate research program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2009, and has conducted medical research in Mexico. Active in community service, Turner helped organize and was the keynote speaker at Marist's 2009 White Ribbon Campaign/Take Back the Night initiative, aimed at ending violence against women.

The NFF Awards Committee will select up to 15 finalists, which will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 28. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2010 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, and will receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The Marist football team (1-2 overall, 0-1 PFL) will take on Drake (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Des Moines, Iowa. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. EDT.
