POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team defeated NJIT 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-8) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Grace Hill (Portage, Mich.) led the Red Foxes with 18 kills while junior Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) tallied 11 digs in the victory as Marist improved to 3-3 on the season.
Senior Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) recorded nine kills for Marist in her season debut. Schmid entered the match in the second set and quickly made her presence felt, recording two service aces.
The first set featured seven ties, with Marist and NJIT deadlocked at 14-14 before two kills by Hill gave Marist a two-point lead. NJIT would eventually tie the set at 16-16 on a service ace by Carly Ziemer.
Marist (3-3) would re-take the lead 19-16 on two NJIT attack errors and an Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) kill, but NJIT would even up the set at 19-19 after kills from Julia Colombo, Ziemer, and Janet Snell.
From there, sophomore Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) recorded a kill and two service aces to put Marist ahead for good. Hill recorded two kills and Burke closed out the set with a kill of her own.
In the second set, Marist opened up a 15-10 lead on two kills by Schmid and a service ace by Estes. Looking to even up the match, NJIT cut into Marist's lead later in the set, closing the gap to 19-17, but the Red Foxes strung together four consecutive points to maintain a 23-17 lead. Kills by Schmid and Estes gave Marist the 25-21 second set victory.
NJIT (1-3) found itself in an early hole to start the third set, falling behind 6-0 on three kills by Hill. Marist never trailed in the third set, holding leads of 17-5 and 21-6 before closing out the match 25-8.
For the match, Marist outhit NJIT .360 to .180 in addition to holding a 45-29 advantage in kills. The Red Foxes also maintained a 39-27 lead in digs, as Robinett led the way with 11.
The Red Foxes will return to action this evening when they host Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
