POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team defeated New Hampshire 58-49 Saturday night at the McCann Center in a Sears BracketBusters contest. Red-shirt sophomore swingman Dorvell Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points, and sophomore point guard Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) added 15. The 49 points marked the lowest the Red Foxes have held an opponent to this season.
In 38 minutes, Carter shot 6-for-11 from the field, 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He scored 12 of Marist's first 17 points - going a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range - and grabbing four rebounds on the evening, setting a career-high in three-pointers made. Carter has scored at least 18 points in four of Marist's last five games.
In addition to his three rebounds and game-high five assists, Price shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, notching a career-high in free throws made. He converted on two pairs of free throws in the final minute of the game, sealing the win for the Red Foxes.
Senior forward Korey Bauer (Whitehall, Pa.) pulled-down a game-high 11 rebounds for the second time in his last three games, while freshman swingman Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) grabbed nine rebounds, all of which came in the first half.
New Hampshire was led by guards Chandler Rhoads and Tyrone Conley, who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively. Both players led the team in assists with three apiece, and forward Brian Benson grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. Center Dane DiLiegro added nine points, eight rebounds and two blocks for New Hampshire.
After surrendering the first four points of the game to New Hampshire, in what turned out to be the Wildcats' largest and only lead of the game, Marist went on a 25-6 run over the next 10 minutes, giving them a comfortable 25-10 lead with 7:19 remaining in the first half. The Red Foxes' largest lead of the game came with 1:20 left in the first half, ahead 16 points.
After Rhoads converted a free throw for New Hampshire with one second remaining in the half, the Red Foxes headed to the locker room with a 31-16 lead over the Wildcats. It was the lowest point total Marist held an opponent to in a half this season. New Hampshire never got closer than seven points in the second half.
New Hampshire shot .370 (20-for-54) from the field, .150 (3-for-20) from three-point range and .429 (6-for-14) from the free-throw line. Marist shot .400 (20-for-50) from the field, .467 (7-for-15) from three-point range and .786 (11-for-14) from the free-throw line. The Red Foxes also out-rebounded New Hampshire 38-32.
Marist improved to 5-24 on the season, while New Hampshire dropped to 12-15 overall.
Marist will play its final home game of the season on Friday, Feb. 25 against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider.
