NEWARK, Del. - The Marist men's lacrosse team opened their 2011 campaign with a road loss against the defending Colonial Athletic Association champion, #17 Delaware Blue Hens by a score of 8-7. With two games of prior 2011 experience behind them, Delaware came out fast staking themselves to a 4-0 lead by the 7:10 mark of the first quarter. This lead would eventually prove insurmountable for Marist.
Sophomore Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) was the first Red Fox to get on the board as he quickly responded with a goal at 6:27. Senior Corey Zindel's (Randolph, N.J.) goal at 4:29 helped Marist cut the Delaware lead in half. Zindel's goal was assisted by sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.).
In the second quarter the Marist comeback continued as sophomores Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.) pass, to send the Red Foxes to the locker room down 6-4.
The third quarter offered little on the scoring side of things with only two Delaware goals and Zindel's second notch of the day, but it was sophomore goalie Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who kept the Red Foxes in it as he saved six shots.
Coming into the fourth down 8-5, Marist's defense held Delaware scoreless throughout the quarter, which was long enough for sophomore Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) and von Hoffmann to score goals and bring the deficit to one with 4:50 to go. Unfortunately for the Red Foxes, time ran out on them and the game went final at 8-7.
With his game-high two goals, Zindel now stretches his consecutive game scoring streak to 20 games, while Rice extends his to 16.
The Red Foxes will be in action next weekend as they open their home slate with a game against Sacred Heart. The game at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is set to begin at 1 p.m.
