Marist Men's Lacrosse Losses Overtime Thriller Versus Sacred Heart, 9-8

Feb. 26, 2011

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team opened their 2011 home campaign with an overtime loss against the Sacred Heart Pioneers by a score of 9-8. In a game which featured strong scoring swings it was the Pioneers, who notched the sudden victory goal with 26 seconds left in overtime. Senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and sophomore Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with four points each.

The first quarter began slowly, as the offenses only accounted for 11 shots. A Mike Mawdsley goal with 2:06 remaining was the only scoring for either team, as Sacred Heart went into the break up 1-0.

Two more Sacred Heart goals stretched the lead to 3-0, before sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) put Marist on the board with 6:05 remaining in the second. His goal was assisted by Zindel. Sacred Heart wasted little time getting back on the scoreboard as Tim Caton scored less than 10 seconds later. A Brian Badolato goal put the visitors up 5-1, a margin which seemingly would take the teams to the locker rooms, until a Connor Rice goal as time expired made it a 5-2 game.

The momentum of the last second goal carried over to the second half for the Red Foxes. In a span of 6:43 from 11:58 to 5:15, Marist scored five unanswered goals. Zindel connected with Rice for their second hookup of the day at 11:58. Zindel continued his crafty playmaking with an assist on Jim Marks' (Camillus, N.Y.) goal at 10:40. This marked Zindel's four assist of the game. 90 seconds later, freshman Tucker Nelson (Penfield, N.Y.) notched his first collegiate goal on a Rice assist to tie the score at 5-5.

Marksgave Marist their first lead of the day with his second goal in a span of two minutes and three seconds at 8:37 in the third. The Red Foxes scoring explosion was completed with freshman Morgan Faller's (Weston, Conn.) first collegiate goal at 5:15. The 6-0 run left Marist on top by a score of 7-5 with just over 20 minutes of regulation time remaining.

Alex Miller and Mawdsley connected on an extra-man opportunity with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter to send the game into the fourth at 7-6 in favor of the Red Foxes.

Badolato and Mawdsley picked up goals 15 seconds apart at 7:45 and 7:30 in the fourth quarter to put the Pioneers ahead once again.

Doherty connected with sophomore Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) on the man-advantage to tie the score at 8-8 with 4:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. The game ended in regulation with the same score.

In overtime, Mawdsley picked up his fourth goal of the contest with the sudden victory game-winner with 26 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. His four goals led both teams for the game.

Zindel was the game-leader with four assists. He was joined in four-point production by Rice, who finished the day with two goals and two assists. Zindel and Rice's consecutive game scoring streaks now reach 21 and 17 games respectively.

The Red Foxes will be in action next weekend as they welcome the nationally ranked Stony Brook Seawolves to Poughkeepsie. The game at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is set to begin at 1 p.m.
