BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 75-60 loss to Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Friday at the Koessler Athletic Center. Sophomore guard Candon Rusin (Surf City, N.C.) scored a career-high 22 points, including a career-high six three-pointers, to lead the Red Foxes.
Rusin shot 7-for-12 from the field and 6-for-9 from three-point range. He also had four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 34 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard Sam Prescott (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 15 points to give Marist two scorers in double digits. Freshman swingman Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) had a team-high five rebounds, and red-shirt sophomore swingman Dorvell Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with a career-high six assists.
Canisius led the game wire-to-wire. After Rusin hit two free throws with 6:12 left in the first half to cut Marist's deficit to 27-21, the hot-shooting Golden Griffins outscored the Red Foxes 21-6 for the remainder of the half to take a 48-27 halftime lead. Canisius shot .667 (20-for-30) from the field in the first half and drained eight three-pointers in 16 attempts.
Marist fought its way back after halftime, and held Canisius without a field goal in the first 5:02 of the second half. A three-pointer by Rusin with 6:48 to play brought the Red Foxes to within 12 at 59-47, but they would come no closer.
Five Golden Griffins scored in double digits, led by Julius Coles, who had 18 points and a game-high six rebounds. Canisius shot .518 (29-for-56) for the game and .435 (10-for-23) from three-point range. Marist shot .435 (20-for-46) from the field and .455 (10-for-22) from three-point range. Canisius held a 31-26 edge in rebounds, and committed just five turnovers while Marist had 15.
Marist fell to 4-20 overall and 3-9 in MAAC play; Canisius improved to 11-11 overall and 5-7 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Sunday, when they head to Niagara. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., and the game will be televised by MSG as part of the MAAC TV package.
