Marist Men's Lacrosse Falls To Canisius 7-5

March 26, 2011

Final Stats

BUFFALO, N.Y. - In a low scoring affair, the Marist men's lacrosse fell to Canisius by a score of 7-5. A 39:25 scoreless drought by Marist, ultimately led to the Golden Griffins securing the victory. Marist was led on offense by sophomore Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.), who had three points. Sophomore goalie Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) came up big for the Red Foxes on defense as he kept the team within striking distance with his nine saves.

Canisius got onto scoreboard first with a Jimmy Haney goal 7:25 into the first quarter. A little over two minutes later, senior Corey Zindel tied the game up when he converted a Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) assist with 5:20 remaining. This scoring connection helped both players extend their consecutive point streaks; 26 games for Zindel and 22 for Rice. Two Simon Giourmetakis' goals closed out the scoring in the first quarter at 3-1 in favor of Canisius. These two goals would end up being the last points of the entire first half, as both teams were held off the scoreboard in the second.

Coming out of the half, the Golden Griffins were able to restart their offense with positive results as they put three more tallies on the board to extend their lead to 6-1. Canisius goalie Sean Callahan and the Golden Griffins' defense shutout the Red Foxes for the second consecutive stanza as Marist closed the third quarter down 6-1.

In the fourth quarter, Marist's offense came to life, as Herman notched the team's second goal of the game at the 10:55 mark. After a Brendan O'Hagan goal stretched Canisius' lead back to five at 7-2, the Red Foxes closed with a fury. Herman connected with sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) on Doherty's 13 goal of the season with 8:37 remaining. Just over a minute later, Herman was at it again, as he converted a Zindel pass for his third point (2g-1a) of the game. Sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) scored Marist's third goal in four minutes at the 4:55 mark. His goal closed the deficit to 7-5. The Red Fox offense kept up the pressure on Canisius as the took six shots in the final 4:22. Unfortunately for Marist, the Golden Griffins stood tall and held the score as final.

Defensively, Price faced 16 shots on goal and turned away nine. Long-stick midfielders Kevin Defranco (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Chris Sharkey (Fair Haven, N.J.) each caused two turnovers to lead the team. Freshman Edward Coombs (Horsham, Pa.) collected a team-high four groundballs.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday April 2 as they host Virginia Military Institute in their third MAAC Lacrosse League game of the season.
