QUEENS, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team dropped a dual match to Big East opponent and nationally ranked St. John's 6-1 on Sunday. Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) captured Marist's sole singles victory of the afternoon.
"I thought we competed well but didn't play well," Marist coach Tim Smith said. "St. John's definitely remembered our match last year."
On April 7, 2010, the Red Foxes defeated the Red Storm, currently ranked #69, 4-3 at the Marist Tennis Pavilion.
Marist lost each of its three double's matches. At first doubles, freshmen Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) lost a close match to Stefan Bojic and Mike Lampa, 7-6 (7-3). Seniors Nicholas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) lost to Matty Najfeld and Mischa Koran 8-6 at third doubles.
In singles action, Himmelsbach defeated Kallen 6-2, 7-5 at the fourth singles position. Van Eck lost to Bojic 6-3, 6-3 at the number one spot; Rossi was defeated by Hauk 6-4, 6-4 at second singles and Pisecky fell to Lampa 6-4, 6-1 at number three singles. At fifth and six singles, Greene lost to Najfeld 6-1, 6-2, while Reznek was defeated by Koran 6-3, 6-1.
Marist is now 5-2 in dual matches this season.
The Red Foxes, who will compete in five matches in the next seven days, will play their first home match of the spring on Tuesday, March 29 at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion against MAAC foe Siena. The match marks Marist's first conference competition of the season. First serve is slated for 3 p.m.
