Marist Men's Lacrosse Upset Attempt Versus #7 Stony Brook Falls Short, 13-7

March 5, 2011

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team welcomed the #7 Stony Brook Seawolves to Poughkeepsie on Saturday afternoon. In a closely contested game in which the Red Foxes held the lead through much of the game and into the third quarter, their upset attempt was thwarted by Stony Brook's 8-0 run to close out the game. After 60 minutes of action, Stony Brook was victorious 13-7. Marist was led by three players with three points; grad student Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.), senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.).

The scoring began with von Hoffmann putting Marist on the board with a goal 2 minutes and 21 seconds into the first quarter. This was the first lead, that Marist had taken in the first quarter through three games this season. Stony Brook responded quickly with a Jordan McBride goal to tie the score at 1 with 10:25 remaining in the first quarter. After a 10 minute scoring lull, Doherty connected with freshman Morgan Faller (Weston, Conn.) on a crisp pass, catch and shoot with 1:24 to put the Red Foxes ahead again. Stony Brook's McBride second tally of the quarter closed out the first with a score of 2-2.

Looking to regain their momentum, Doherty came out in the second quarter and gave the Red Foxes the lead again with his goal off a Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) assist at 12:22. The Seawolves responded back with a Timmy Trenkle goal to tie the game at 3-3 with 9:25 remaining in the first half. A two goal run setup off of von Hoffmann passes, put Marist ahead 5-3. Sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) and Zindel were the recipients who notched the markers. McBride's third goal of the game closed out the half with the Red Foxes ahead 5-4.

Coming out of halftime with a man-advantage, Zindel pushed the Marist lead up to two again with his goal 23 seconds in. Nearly eight minutes would go by without goal as the Red Foxes held their ground. A holding penalty assessed to von Hoffmann at 7:06 gave the Seawolves a man-up opportunity, which Kevin Crowley quickly converted at 6:43. Through the first 38 minutes of play, the Division 1 preseason Player of the Year had been kept off the scoresheet by strong efforts from Marist's midfield and defense fronts. Marist responded less than two minutes later as Faller picked up his second goal of the game to put ahead 7-5. Much like his first goal, Faller scored his finisher of a Doherty pass. A burst of offense from Stony Brook helped the Seawolves close the quarter on a 3-0 run and take the lead into the fourth.

Starting the fourth quarter with their first lead of the game, Stony Brook took control. They converted five of their eight shots to push the lead and final outcome to 13-7. McBride scored his fourth, Crowley his third and Trenkle his second goal of the game in the fourth quarter.

For the game, Zindel and Faller shared the lead with two goals a piece. Doherty and von Hoffmann shared the assist lead with two helpers. Defensively senior Nick Armstrong (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three caused turnovers and three ground ball pickups. Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made a season-high 13 saves against the Seawolves' powerful offense.

Zindel and Rice's consecutive game scoring streaks now reach 22 and 18 games respectively.

The Red Foxes will be in action next weekend as they travel to Binghamton to take on the Bearcats on Saturday, March 12. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
