POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 4-2 loss to Rider in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday at McCann Baseball Field. The Broncs scored a run apiece in the eighth and ninth, which broke a 2-2 tie and enabled them to claim a series sweep.
Junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.) and senior left fielder Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 for the Red Foxes, with Pacione adding a double and a run scored. Pacione finished the series 7-for-11.
Rider scored twice in the top of the first, and Marist cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the third. Freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) left off with a single to center. After he was sacrificed to second by freshman right fielder Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.), sophomore first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) singled through the right side to bring McQuail home.
In the bottom of the sixth, Pacione led off with a single and later advanced to third on an error. He scored to the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of red-shirt senior catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.).
Rider took the lead for good in the top of the eighth when Mason Heyne doubled with two outs to score Brandon Cotton. In the ninth, a two-out single by John Ralston brought home Adam Wayman to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Broncs.
Rider closer Tyler Smith got the final three outs, all via strikeout, to earn the save. Smith saved all three of the Broncs' wins in the series.
Jeff Giordano (1-0) earned the win for Rider with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Rider starter Joe Calogero went the first 6.2 innings, and allowed six hits, three walks and both Marist runs, one of which was unearned. He struck out four.
Marist sophomore right-hander Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) went the first six innings and allowed five hits and two runs. McKeown struck out three.
Marist fell to 21-9 overall and 4-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play; Rider is now 19-10 on the season and 8-1 in conference.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday, when they Red Foxes head to Brown for a non-conference doubleheader, which is slated to start at 2 p.m.
