Marist Men's Tennis Extends Winning Streak To Five, Downs Army 6-1

April 11, 2011

Final Stats

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team's annual match with Army has become such an important date on the schedule that head coach Tim Smith rested some of his players in preparation during a doubleheader on Saturday.

On Monday afternoon, the Red Foxes defeated the Cadets 6-1 to run their winning streak to five as they improved to 13-3 overall.

"This is one of the few times we have swept the doubles against any team," Smith said, "let alone a good team such as Army."

Over the last week, senior Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) has become a fixture in the doubles' lineup. Hobbs is frequently paired with fellow senior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland), which forms a doubles team of significant experience heading toward MAAC tournament. Hobbs and Pisecky downed Tripp Johnson and Rommel Verano at first doubles, 8-5. In the second slot, junior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) teamed up to handily defeat Gary Kushnirovich and Alex Holland 8-2. At third doubles, the freshman duo of Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) beat Asika Isoh and Henry Jang-Milsten 8-5.

At first singles, Rossi defeated Isoh 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. This time slotted at second singles, Pisecky continued his trend of comeback victories. After losing the first set narrowly, Pisecky dominated the second set and fought through an ultra-competitive breaker to beat Kushnirovich 5-7, 6-0, 14-12.

At third, fourth, and fifth singles, the Red Foxes beat the Cadets convincingly. Himmelsbach cruised past Donald Van Velzer 6-1, 6-0, Greene toppled Johnson 6-1, 6-1, and Reznek downed Holland 6-2, 6-3. In the final slot, senior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) dropped a close match to Jang-Milsten 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-7.

"I was very proud of the high level of performance by the entire team," Smith said.

Marist returns to action on Thursday in Poughkeepsie against MAAC foe Rider. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but has been postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather. First serve at Marist Tennis Pavilion is set for 3:30 p.m.
