RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 5-1 loss to Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Friday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. After senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard with a solo home run on the first pitch of the third innings, the Jaspers rebounded by scoring all of their runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Gallic went 4-for-5, and had half of Marist's hits. The only other Red Fox to have a multi-hit game was junior third baseman Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.), who went 2-for-4 with a double.
Red-shirt junior left-hander Chad Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) pitched a complete game for Marist. Gallagher allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out five. Two of the five runs he allowed were unearned. With the loss, Gallagher fell to 5-2.
The big blow for Manhattan in the third came off the bat of third baseman Chad Salem. With the Red Foxes holding a 1-0 lead and the bases loaded with one out, Salem lined a bases-clearing double to right-center field. Salem later scored on an error to give the Jaspers a 4-1 lead, and designated hitter Kyle Murphy's sacrifice fly brought home first baseman Austin Sheffield for Manhattan's fifth and final run of the inning.
Manhattan starter John Soldinger went 8.1 innings to earn the victory. Soldinger allowed eight hits and four walks while striking out six. With the victory, he improved to 6-1. Jacob Marchus got the final two outs in relief of Soldinger, including a strikeout.
Marist left 10 runners on base. The Red Foxes left the bases loaded in the fifth, and stranded a pair of runners in the eighth.
Marist is now 22-10 overall and 4-6 in the MAAC; Manhattan stands at 16-12 overall and 10-0 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes and Jaspers will meet again on Sunday, when the teams play a doubleheader. The first game will be seven innings, followed by a nine-inning second game. First pitch at Van Cortlandt Park is scheduled for noon.
