Final Stats
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team defeated Jacksonville 9-8 in a tight back and forth battle Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville In a game with six ties, a Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) goal with 1:33 remaining in overtime gave the Red Foxes the sudden-goal victory on their first and only lead of the game. Marist was led by Rice's three goals and senior Corey Zindel's three points via two goals and an assist. The win improved Marist to 5-6 and 2-2 in the MAAC this season. They move into a three-way tie for third place with their win.
The Dolphins started out fast as they staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after 10:13 of action. After a faceoff win by sophomore Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.) netted the team's first goal at 3:44. Rice scored Marist's second consecutive goal at 0:58 to close out the quarter with the score Jacksonville 3, Marist 2. The Red Foxes notched their two goals in the first period on just three shots taken.
In the second quarter, Rice evened the game up for Marist as he took a pass from sophomore Nick Piotti (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) assist with 8:27 remaining. Jacksonville closed out the half with a JP Ricker goal to make the score 5-4.
The back and forth scoring action continued in the third quarter as Zindel's first goal of the game tied the game at 5-5 at 10:48. A Jacksonville goal at 6:36 was answered by sophomore Jim Marks' (Camillus, N.Y.) tally at 3:34. The teams went into the fourth quarter all tied up at 6-6.
Jacksonville took their fifth lead of the game with a Bobby Stockton goal at 9:02. Less than two minutes later, Marks responded with his second goal of the game. Over the next 2:21, the Dolphins won the faceoff and controlled the ball as they took six shots. Unfortunately for Marist, their sixth shot made it into the back of the net for an 8-7 lead. With Jacksonville controlling the ball and looking to run the clock out, freshman Edward Coombs (Horsham, Pa.) came up with a huge caused turnover to win the ball back for Marist. Coming out of a timeout at 1:06, the Red Fox offense went to work and ran a successful set, which ended with Zindel scoring the game-tying eighth goal with 54 seconds remaining.
In overtime, a Jacksonville faceoff win looked to spell doom for Marist as the Dolphins had a minute and a half possession where they took four shots and picked up three ground balls off of rebounds. Marist won the ball back as junior Zach Badalucco caused a turnover at 2:25. With the ball back in their possession, the Red Foxes drew a Dolphin to give them a man-advantage that was set to last until 1:16. Luckily for Marist, they would not need the full 60 seconds, as Rice notched his third goal of the game off of a Zindel pass with 1:33 remaining. With this connection, Zindel picked up his 100th career assist, making him the third Red Fox in program history to reach this mark. The After 64 minutes of action, the Red Foxes were victorious by a score of 9-8 for their fourth consecutive win.
Defensively, Marist had four players caused two turnovers. Dugan led the team with 11 ground balls on the strength of his 14-22 showing in the faceoff circle. Sophomore goalie Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made 13 saves as he helped to slow down the nation's 13th-highest scoring offense.
With their three point days, both Zindel and Rice extend their consecutive games with a point streak to 30 and 26 games, respectively.
The Red Foxes will next be in action next Saturday as they travel to Manhattan for an important MAAC contest that is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
