STORRS, Conn. - The Marist men's tennis team closed out regular-season play with a 6-1 victory at Connecticut of the Big East Conference on Monday. The victory was the eighth straight for the Red Foxes as they improved to 16-3 overall.
"This was a good tune-up for the MAAC [Championship] in two days, with all of the guys performing at a high level," Head Coach Tim Smith said.
Marist won five of the six singles matches, and swept the doubles. At first singles, freshman Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) downed Scott Warden, 6-4, 6-0 at second singles. In the third spot, senior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) lost to Jai Yoon, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. Senior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) topped Dave Adams at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-2. At fifth singles, reigning MAAC Player of the Week Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Wei Lin at sixth singles. In non-scoring matches, freshman Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) topped Teddy Margules, 6-3, 6-3.
At first doubles, Hobbs and Pisecky downed Marcus and Warden, 8-5. Greene and Van Eck earned an 8-4 victory over Yoon and Adams at second doubles. The duo of Rossi and Reznek earned an 8-3 triumph over Cardona and Lin. In a non-scoring match at fourth doubles, von Nordheim and Klassen toppled Margules and Nic Visinski, 8-2.
The Marist men's tennis team will be the number one seed in this week's MAAC Championships. Marist will face fourth-seeded Loyola in its first match on Wednesday at noon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The championship match will be held on Thursday.
