Marist Men's Lacrosse Wins At Manhattan In 8-7 Come From Behind Overtime Victory

April 23, 2011

Final Stats

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team defeated Manhattan 8-7 in the team's second consecutive overtime conference victory. In a game that saw the Jaspers twice take three goal leads, it was a 3-0 run by the Red Foxes to close the game that forced the extra period and eventually the team's third overtime win of the 2011 season. Marist's fifth consecutive victory was fueled by sophomore Jim Marks' (Camillus, N.Y.) overtime game-winner. For the game, he led the Red Foxes with two goals and an assist. The win improves Marist to 6-6 and 3-2 in the MAAC. They move into sole possession of third place with one weekend of conference games left to play.

The action started off slowly as the teams went more than seven minutes without a goal before Manhattan's Kelly Mahon broke into the scoring column at 7:51. The Jaspers notched two more goals at 2:09 and 1:46 to raise their advantage to 3-0. After a faceoff win by sophomore Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.), the Red Foxes set up their offense quickly and converted at 1:18 with Mark's first tally of the game. 57 seconds later, senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) scored a man-up goal off of an Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) assist to make it a 3-2 game after one period.

Sophomore Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) completed the first comeback for Marist with a goal at 10:38. With this goal, both Rice and Zindel had successfully extended their consecutive point streaks to 27 and 31 games, respectively. Mahon completed his hat trick with two straight goals at the 7:55 and 5:00 marks in the second to give Manhattan a 5-3 lead. Over the final 2:32, the teams exchanged goals as sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored one for the Red Foxes and Tyler Jarvis one for the Jaspers.

Coming out of halftime down 6-4, the Red Foxes saw their deficit grow to three as Manhattan notched goal number seven at 10:28. From this point until their overtime game winner at 3:42, a span of 25:46, the Red Foxes shut out the Jaspers.

Freshman Morgan Faller (Weston, Conn.) started the comeback for Marist with his fourth goal of the season coming on a man-up advantage at 3:48 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter began with the Red Foxes down 7-5. Freshman Bob von Hoffmann's (Montclair, N.J.) goal at 3:41, gave Marist their second tie of the game. Over the final three plus minutes of action, the Red Foxes walked a tightrope as the Jaspers won the face off and had an 10-8 man advantage from 2:34 to 2:04. After forcing a Manhattan turnover, Marist had one final offensive opportunity. Zindel was the player at the end, who had the final look. With 14 seconds remaining, his shot was saved by goalie Matt Solomito.

In overtime, with the ball in their possession, Marist quickly drove to the net and Herman took a shot that was saved by Solomito. After the save, the bounding rebound was collected by Rice, who fed Marks for the game-winning goal 18 seconds in at 3:42.

Defensively, Marist was led by senior Chris Sharkey (Fair Haven, N.J.), who had a team-high two caused turnovers. Dugan had another strong showing in the faceoff circle as he went 10-18. Sophomore goalie Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) made five saves as he helped the Marist defense hold their sixth opponent of the season to eight or less goals.

The Red Foxes will next be in action on Tuesday as they travel to Holy Cross in their final non-conference game of the regular season. The contest is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
