BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore first baseman Sean McKeown (Hillsborough, N.J.) pitched 4.2 strong innings of relief as the Marist baseball team defeated Canisius 7-3 on Sunday. The Red Foxes took two out of three from their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival this weekend.
After freshman second baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) drew consecutive walks to open the third inning, Orefice's three-run blast to right-center put the Red Foxes up 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, McKeown entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs, and forced Canisius second baseman Jose Torralba to line out to right field to end the inning.
The score remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth, when the Red Foxes added three more runs. Sophomore shortstop Jon Schwind (Hilton, N.Y.).
Canisius was held hitless until the sixth, when a two-run homer by right fielder Chris Gruarin made the score 6-2. Marist scored its final run in its next at-bat, when senior center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) belted a leadoff double, and scored two hitters later on an RBI single by Shank. Canisius scored the final run of the game in the eighth.
Marist outhit Canisius, 11-4. Orefice went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Berry went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Schwind was 2-for-5 with an RBI. The Red Foxes also drew seven walks.
The two-run homer in the sixth was the only hit McKeown allowed in his outing. He also struck out two as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Junior right-hander Jake Rifkin (West Deptford, N.J.) finished the game by pitching 2.2 innings, and allowing three hits and an unearned run while striking out two.
Chris Cox (0-5), who allowed six runs in 5.1 innings, took the loss for the Golden Griffins.
Marist improved to 19-6 overall and 4-2 in the MAAC; Canisius is now 12-16 overall and 4-2 in conference. The Red Foxes have won nine of their last 11 series against MAAC opponents.
The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game at Bucknell. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
