Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Detroit, Clinches MAAC Tournament Berth

April 30, 2011

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Detroit men's lacrosse team hoped to leave Poughkeepsie on Saturday with the top seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League Tournament.

The Red Foxes had other plans.

With the final seconds ticking way and the Marist men's lacrosse team having seen a six-goal lead shrink to one, a shot was rifled at sophomore Marist goalie Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.). When it counted the most, Price made the save to clinch a 14-13 Marist win and a spot in the MAAC tournament for the second consecutive season, all while spoiling the Titans' aspiration for the top seed. The win was the Red Foxes seventh in a row.

The Red Foxes were led by four goals from sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.), and three from sophomore Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.), who also contributed three assists, matching three from senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.Y.). With their outstanding offensive days, both Zindel and Rice's consecutive points per game streaks reach 33 and 29 games, respectively. Defensively, Price contributed eight saves after assuming goalie duties for the second half.

Marks scored his first goal of the contest 86 seconds into the first quarter to begin the scoring. After over ten minutes of scoreless play, goals from graduate student Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore Nick Piotti (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) in a span of 54 seconds extended Marist's early lead to 3-0 with 2:05 remaining in the first quarter.

Fifty-five seconds into the second quarter, Rice scored for Marist, extending the early lead to 4-0. Just seven seconds following Rice's goal, Alex Maini finally cracked the scoreboard for the Titans. Two goals by Zindel extended the lead to 6-1.

However, Detroit would not let the contest slip out of reach. With a series of face-off wins, Detroit compiled more opportunities with more possessions. The Titans scored four consecutive goals to cut the lead to 6-5 and steal the momentum. Freshman Tucker Nelson's (Penfield, N.Y.) goal with 1:16 remaining in the half gave Marist a 7-5 lead going into halftime.

While the Titans may have scored four of five to conclude the first half, the Red Foxes would not be derailed in the third quarter. Marist stole the momentum back, scoring five of the first six goals in the third quarter. Marks and sophomore Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) each scored two goals during this run, while Rice added one.

Reminiscent of the second quarter, the Titans would mount a comeback. After Marks fourth goal of the game gave the Red Foxes a controlling 14-8 lead with 11:06 remaining in the game, five consecutive Detroit goals in a span of 6:05 cut the Marist lead to 14-13 with 2:49 remaining.

Before the game, seniors Zindel, R.J. Discher (Randolph, N.J.), Lou Loria (Bethpage, N.Y.), Ryan McNierney (Commack, N.Y.) and Chris Sharkey (Fair Haven, N.J.) were honored as part of the program's annual Senior Day ceremony.

The Red Foxes and the Titans will re-match in the first round of the MAAC Tournament next weekend in Buffalo, N.Y. Marist has earned the second seed in the tournament, while Detroit is the third seed.
