FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Against a formidable Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent, the Marist men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat Fairfield 5-2 at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts. The Red Foxes were led by freshmen Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada), both of whom won two matches.
The win improved Marist to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC.
"I was extremely happy with the play of our freshmen, who won in straight sets in singles and also won their doubles match," Head Coach Tim Smith said.
The Red Foxes lost a hotly contested doubles point, which featured two matches decided by one point. At first doubles, sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) and junior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) by a score of 9-8. In the final slot, Rossi and Reznek teamed up to return the favor, defeating Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder 9-8.
Marist won the first three singles slots. Rossi beat Sauter 6-2, 6-4. After losing the first set 3-6 to Michalisin, Van Eck rebounded to win two closely contested sets 6-4, 10-8. At third singles, Pisecky downed Zlobinksy 6-1, 6-4. Himmelsbach dropped Marist's sole singles match of the afternoon in three sets to Kremheller 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. In the bottom two slots, Greene ousted Ferrante 6-1, 6-4, and Reznek handled Reece Breault 6-2, 6-2. With wins in singles and doubles, Reznek has won his last 10 matches.
"I reminded our players that although we won this match 5-2, two years ago, they won 5-2 and then we beat them in the conference tournament. The score was closer than 5-2," Coach Smith said.
The Red Foxes will return to their home courts at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion on Friday against Hofstra. First serve is slated for 4:30 p.m.
