Marist Men's Lacrosse Defeats Rutgers in Thrilling 10-9 Victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team defeated Rutgers 10-9 in an exciting match Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes were led by sophomore Jack Doherty's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) five goals and sophomore Connor Rice's (Penfield, N.Y.) five points on a goal and four assists. The win improved Marist to 4-6 on the season.

The Red Foxes got on the board first with a goal by senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) on a Rice assist at the 11:41 mark of the first period. The goal extended both players consecutive games with a point streak to 29 and 25, respectively. After Rutgers tied the score at one, Marist reclaimed the lead on a goal by Doherty at the 6:01 mark. With the score tied at two, Rice scored his 14th goal of the season to give the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead at the 1:02 mark.

Zindel opened the second period with his second goal of the game and 16th on the season to put Marist up 4-2 at the 14:38 mark. After Rutgers cut the Marist lead to 4-3, the Red Foxes went on a 2-0 run to open up the lead to 6-3 on goals by Doherty and freshman Nick Piotti (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) pass, which he launched while horizontal on the ground. After Rutgers scored, the Red Foxes closed the first half scoring with Doherty's third goal of the game at 6:09 to go into the locker room with a 7-4 lead.

Marist stretched the lead to five with goals from graduate student Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.) and Doherty at the 9:44 and 5:49 marks, respectively. The goal was von Hoffmann's fourth on the season. After Rutgers closed the score to 9-7, Doherty responded with his fifth goal of the game to give the Red Foxes a 10-7 lead at the 9:08. This was his 25th on the season and 19th in his last five games. Rutgers responded with two goals at 8:16 and 5:10, but Marist was able to hold off all attacks from Rutgers' offense over the final five minutes of play for a 10-9 victory.

Defensively, the Red Foxes were led by Rice, sophomore Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) and senior Nick Armstrong (Kings Park, N.Y.) who picked up four ground balls apiece. Freshman Edward Coombs (Horsham, Pa.) caused two turnovers to lead Marist.

The Red Foxes picked up 29 ground balls to 26 for the Scarlet Knights in the match and were successful on 17 out of 19 attempted clears. Marist's defense was credited with 11 caused turnovers on 16 Rutgers turnovers in the game.

Marist will next be in action at Jacksonville on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
