Marist Men's Lacrosse Falls In Hard Fought Battle To Detroit 9-8 In MAAC Semifinals

May 7, 2011

Final Stats

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist Men's Lacrosse team lost to Detroit in a tightly contested physical battle by a final score of 9-8. Six days after defeating the Titans in Poughkeepsie by one goal, a fourth quarter goal by Detroit 13 seconds into the period ended up being the deciding factor. After falling behind 6-1 midway through the second quarter the Red Foxes never quit and eventually tied the game at 8-8 with two minutes to go in the third. Senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) led all scorers as he had five points on four assists and a goal. Sophomore Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) scored a game-high four goals.

Detroit started the game off with two early goals in the first quarter to put the Red Foxes in a 2-0 hole after 2:55 of action. Sophomore Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) cut into the deficit as he took a sharp pass from senior Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and put it into the back of the net with 6:51 remaining. The Titans closed the quarter with two unanswered goals to go up 4-1.

The second quarter started much like the first as the Titans notched two tallies in the early portion of the quarter. Down 6-1, sophomore Bob von Hoffmann (Montclair, N.J.) and scored the second Red Fox goal with 6:22 remaining. Less than four minutes later, Rice answered with his second goal of the day at 2:27 to draw Marist within three at 6-3. With this goal Rice reached the century mark in career points (58G-42A). Detroit quickly responded with a face-off win and streak to the goal to make the score 7-3, just 10 seconds later. Zindel connected with Rice one more time in the half at 0:58, as they drew the score to a close at 7-4.

Coming out down three, the Red Foxes looked to take advantage of the momentum, which helped them close the first on a 3-1 run. Take advantage they did, as von Hoffmann scored 66 seconds into the quarter. 2:52 later, Rice notched goal number four of the evening as he spun to net and rocketed a shot past Detroit's goalie. With the score 7-6, Detroit's Scott Harris increased the Titan lead to 8-6 with 10:42 remaining in the third. Marist converted a man-up situation as sophomore Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) took a Zindel pass and made it 8-7. Zindel broke into the goal scoring column with the final tally of the quarter with two minutes to go. His fifth point of the game brought the game even at 8-8. Marist outscored Detroit 4-1 in the period even though they had one fewer shot at seven to the Titans' eight.

With the game even, a Detroit face-off win at the beginning of the fourth quarter ended up being the decisive play as they quickly converted it to goal 13 seconds in. Marist had opportunities the rest of the period, but Detroit's goalie A.J. Levell came up with multiple saves to shutout the Red Fox offense in the fourth. After 60 minutes of hard-fought action, Detroit was victorious 9-8. The Titans improve their 2011 record to 6-9 and move on to face Siena on Sunday in the MAAC Championship game, while Marist completes their campaign with an 8-7 record.

Defensively, senior Chris Sharkey (Fair Haven, N.J.) led three Red Foxes with two caused turnovers. Sophomore Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) went 7-13 in face-offs and led the team with six ground balls.

As a team, Marist outshot Detroit 39-23, with 21 of those shots being on net. Levell ended the game with 13 saves for the Titans, as sophomore Brendan Price (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had 6 for Marist.

With their goal scoring connection in the first quarter, the duo of Zindel and Rice increased their top 15 NCAA consecutive games with a point streaks to 34 and 30 games, respectively.

Zindel's five points in the game cap his career with 190, the fifth most points in program history. His four assists pulled him to within one of number two all-time. He finishes his four year Red Fox career in third with 110 helpers.
