NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Marist women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Yale Bulldogs on Friday night in the first game of the Yale Soccer Classic. In an evenly-matched game, Yale (1-0) converted a goal in each half and withstood multiple attacks by the Red Fox (0-2) offense.
Yale jumped out to early lead in the ninth minute as Anne Song found a streaking Meredith Speck, who converted the one-on-one with Marist goalkeeper Courey Schaetzle (Erie, Pa.). The Red Foxes attempted to break through into the scoring column the rest of the first half as both Jessica Arabia (Naperville, Ill.) and Mariah Downey (Chesire, Conn.) rocketed shots towards Yale's net. Arabia's attempt was line-drive shot from 35 yards out that flew just inches above the crossbar, while Downey laced a low left-footed shot from 20 yards out that was saved by Yale's goalkeeper.
Schaetzle came up big in holding the deficit at one through the first half as she made two saves and intercepted two crosses intended for charging Yale forwards.
Coming out of half down 1-0, the Red Foxes continued pressuring the Bulldogs and manufacturing quality scoring opportunities. Arabia was the first Marist player with an attempt. Off of a restart following a foul in the 46th minute, she took a shot that sailed just high over the goal.
As the physicality picked up and more fouls were called, the Red Foxes seemed poised to convert. With Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) taking the free kicks and whipping high-looping crosses into the 18-yard box, Yale's defense stood strong each time, much to the chagrin of Marist.
In the 65th minute, the Bulldogs added an insurance goal as Emma Mullo put a through ball onto the foot of Georgiana Wagemann, who found the back of the net with a shot from 12 yards out.
Over the final 25 minutes, Marist kept up the pressure in Yale's defensive zone. Kathryn Hannis (Bloomsbury, N.J.) had the Red Foxes' best opportunity over this period of time as she headed a Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) cross just beyond the upper left corner of the goal.
For the game, Marist was outshot by Yale 13-11, with the Bulldogs holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Foxes' next game will be in New Haven again on Sunday as they take on Central Connecticut State in the final game of the Yale Soccer Classic.
