POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match at McCann Arena.
Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) led the match with 14 kills and Katie Estes (Saugus, Calif.) was also in double digits with 11. Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) had 18 digs and Becca Jones added 10 digs and 10 kills. While Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had a match-high of 38 assists and 13 digs.
Marist (9-15, 5-9 MAAC) maintained the lead throughout the entire first set but was never more than three-points ahead as the Peacocks (1-27, 0-14 MAAC) continuously fought back after every play. With the score at 23-22 Jones had two kills assisted by Brady that closed the set with the final margin of 25-23.The set was led offensively by Stephens with 6 kills and Estes with 5, while Brady had 14 assists.
The second set started out much like the first as the Red Foxes maintained control of the lead but the Peacocks continued to answer them until the score was 18-17 where Marist went on a 5-0 run. The run was led by Stephens who had a kill and a block, along with Estes with a kill after Saint Peter's two service errors. Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) closed the set with a kill, to win the set 25-18.
The Red Foxes started quickly in the third set with a 5-0 run led by Stephens with three kills and two blocks as they took an early 11-3 lead on the Peacocks. Saint Peter's tried to close the lead but was unsuccessful as the Marist volleyball team went on a 4-0 run to end the match with a final margin of 25-16.
Marist is right back on the court Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in McCann Arena versus MAAC opponent
