COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Marist men's lacrosse team suffered a 17-4 loss on Saturday at fourth-ranked Maryland. Junior attack Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) paced the Red Foxes offensively with a goal and an assist.
The Red Foxes also received goals from junior attack Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) and freshman midfielder Brett Bernardo (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Doherty led the Red Foxes with four total shots, while Begley had a team-best three shots on goal.
Maryland led 6-0 after the first quarter, and expanded the lead to 11-0 before Doherty got the Red Foxes on the scoreboard with a man-up goal 1:02 before halftime, which was set up by Rice. Marist held Maryland scoreless for the first 12:21 of the third quarter.
Maryland outshot Marist, 43-23, and held a 44-19 edge in ground balls. Jay Carlson scored four times for the Terrapins, while Joe Cummings added three goals and an assist.
Junior Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) won 13 of his 24 face-offs for the Red Foxes.
Marist fell to 2-1 this season; Maryland improved to 4-1. The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at Rutgers.
