Marist Goes 2-1 in Spring Break Action in Florida

ORLANDO,  Fla. - The Marist women's tennis team competed in a trio of non-conference games during the squad's annual Spring Break trip to Florida. After an initial lost to Bethune-Cookman by a score of 5-2, the Red Foxes closed with 6-1 victories over North Dakota and Colgate. Senior Erin McCarthy (Salem, N.J.) led the team with a perfect 6-0 mark in combined singles and doubles action. Sophomore Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.) was close behind as she went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.

BETHUNE-COOKMAN 5 - MARIST 2: (Box Score)

In the team's first match of the trip, the Red Foxes ran into a strong Wildcat squad, who came in with a 9-2 record. Marist won three matches outright (2 singles and a doubles) and pushed another to a tie-breaking third set.

Erin McCarthy was the leading player for the Red Foxes as she won her #2 singles match over Stacey Speller, 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 and her #1 doubles match with teammate Kelsey Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) over Bethune-Cookman's duo of Szaboova and Robakidze, 8-6.

Marielle Campbell was the other victorious Red Fox as she defeated Gvantsa Rodakidze in fifth singles action by a score of 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Raynor had a tight battle on her hands in first singles action as she went into a tie-breaking third set with Katarina Szaboova before eventually falling by a score of 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.

MARIST 6 - NORTH DAKOTA 1: (Box Score)

The Red Foxes came out the next day and put together a dominate performance versus the Fighting Sioux. In their 6-1 victory, the team's only loss came by way of a tie-breaking third set.

Junior Joana Sun (Gales Ferry, Conn.) made the shortest work of her singles opponent as she defeated Megan Sween, 6-2, 6-1.

Marist's four other straight set singles victors were: #1 Kelsey Raynor over Stephanie Petsis, 6-2, 6-2, #2 Erin McCarthy over Stephanie Biehn, 6-4, 6-4, #5 Marielle Campbell over Lindsey Viegut, 6-3, 6-1 and senior Kayla O'Donovan (Lynbrook, N.Y.) over Mindy Lawrence in #6 singles, 6-1, 7-6.

In doubles action, the #3 team of Campbell and freshman Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) swept Lawrence and Viegut, 8-0. The pairings of Raynor and McCarthy, and Sun and O'Donovan earned 8-3 wins in first and second doubles play, respectively.

MARIST 6 - COLGATE 1: (Box Score)

The Red Foxes closed out their set of non-conference matches in Orlando with a second consecutive dominate performance, this time versus the Colgate Raiders. Five wins in singles competition and the doubles point gave Marist the 6-1 victory.

Sabrina Tahir made quick work of her opponent in fourth singles as she defeated Merideth Rock, 6-0 and 6-1.

Kelsey Raynor, Erin McCarthy and Marielle Campbell also collected swift straight set victories in first, second and fifth singles, respectively. Raynor defeated Alex Petrini 6-1, 6-2. McCarthy defeated Kelsey Shea 6-0, 6-2 and Campbell swept Becky Silvers 6-2, 6-0.

Joana Sun was the fifth Red Fox to earn a singles win in third singles. She defeated Stephanie Brown, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-3.

Kayla O'Donovan lost a tight three set battle in sixth singles to Jackie Finn, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6 and 10-8.

In doubles action, the #1 team of Raynor and McCarthy earned an 8-2 victory of Petrini and Brown, while the #3 team of Campbell and Tahir defeated Silvers and Finn, 8-4 to clinch the doubles point.

The Red Foxes will be back in action on Sunday, March 25 when they kick off their home schedule with a 1 p.m. matchup versus Albany.
