STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team continued their four game road swing to start the season with a 10-9 come from behind victory at Stony Brook Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The win avenged a 13-7 home loss last season at the hand of the then seventh-ranked Seawolves.
Trailing 9-7 with 5:55 left in the game, Jack Doherty (Yorktown, Heights, N.Y.) got the comeback started with a man-up goal off of a feed from Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.). Just a minute later, Rice scored a man-up goal of his own to knot the score at 9-9.
With under a minute to go, Doherty returned the favor, finding Rice for the game-winner with 36 seconds remaining. The Marist (2-0) defense did not allow a shot on goal over the final 10:29, meanwhile blocking to shot attempts and forcing four turnovers.
The Red Foxes were paced by Rice who recorded his second straight five-point performance with three goals and two assists. Doherty also had three goals for his second consecutive hat trick and added an assist as well. Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) also recorded his second multi-point performance of the season with two goals. Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) also found the back of the net and Craig Goodermote (Holtsville, N.Y.) made six saves in goal.
Marist jumped ahead early with two goals in the first five minutes. First, after Zach Badalucco (Brewster, N.Y.) caused a turnover on the defensive end, Begley shot past the Seawolves goalie with 11:25 left in the first quarter. Doherty scored his first of the afternoon just 61 seconds later, off a Rice assist.
Stony Brook (0-3) scored twice to tie the score before the end of the quarter.
The two teams traded scores again in the second quarter. Doherty notched his second score 23 seconds in on a pass from Rice. After two Seawolves' goals gave them the lead, Marks scored his first goal of the season to tie the score at four-all at halftime.
The third period followed suit, with the two teams playing back-and-forth and neither side able to obtain a lead of more than one. After Stony Brook jumped ahead 5-4, Begley responded with his second of the game, off an assist from Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.). Following another Seawolves' score, Rice and Nesmith scored back-to-back to give the Red Foxes a brief 7-6 lead.
Stony Brook responded with three straight goals of their own over a seven minute span ranging into the fourth quarter. After their ninth goal with 10:29 left, the Marist defense held the Seawolves to just three shot attempts the rest of the way, none of which made it to the net.
Notes - Senior captain Kevin Defranco (Shoreham, N.Y.) wore #34 in honor of former Red Fox Eddie Coombs, who died last summer in an automobile accident. Each game, a Marist player will wear the jersey based on who the coaches think earned it in practice and the previous game.
