Women's Soccer Falls To Temple In Overtime Heart-Breaker, 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In a game which Marist controlled from the first minute, the Red Foxes unfortunately were tripped up by an overtime goal versus Temple on Sunday afternoon. Though dominate in terms of offensive statistics and possession, a goal by Paula Jurewicz in the 97th minute gave Marist its first-ever home loss under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Kate Lyn. Senior Jaclynn Sabia (Wayne, N.J.) led the Red Fox offense with eight shots, while Caitlin Landsman (Burke, Va.) made six saves in goal.

Marist flexed its offensive muscle in the first half as they registered 10 of the game's first 11 shots. Senior Melanie Rigo (Huntington, N.Y.) tested Temple's goalkeeper Tara Murphy first in the seventh minute as she hit a booming strike from 35 yards out after she intercepted the Owls' clearance of a Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) corner kick. Junior Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) was next up to test Murphy, as in the 11th minute she received a pass, spun by her defender and ripped a curling right-footed shot that required a leaping save from the goalie. The game stayed scoreless as the two other times that the Red Foxes put shots on goal Murphy made saves.

Defensively, Landsman's aggressiveness played a pivotal role in minimizing scoring opportunities for Temple as on multiple occasions as she intercepted crosses or lead passes between the Owls' offensive players.

At the half, the game was scoreless with Marist holding an 11-3 advantage in shots.

In the second period it was more of the same as the Red Foxes continued pressing and the Owls continued to stave off danger. Within the first 15 minutes, Temple's defense was tested with two shots on goal and two more blocked shots. Both of Marist's shots on goals were facilitated by senior Chelsea Botta (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who was moved up from her starting defensive wing position. In the first shot on goal, Botta put a looping cross into the six-yard box to a leaping Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), while the second attempt consisted of a Botta pass in from the right corner to Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.).

After the initial push by Marist's offense in the second half, the defense and Landsman were called upon to deny a handful of Temple scoring chances. In a ten minute span between the 70 and 80th minute, the senior goalkeeper faced four shots on goal.

Jaclynn Sabia led Marist's final drive to break the scoreless contest as she recorded two shots on goal in the last 10 minutes of regulation. Murphy saved both shots to keep the game at 0-0 and headed to an overtime period.

In overtime, the story remained the same as Marist's offense continued putting shots towards goal. The shot that nearly brought the fans at Tenney Stadium out of their seats and into a frenzy was a Guiney attempt in the 94th minute off of a free kick. Spotting up from 40-plus yards away, the junior hit a strong knuckling ball that wavered towards the crossbar, unlucky for Guiney and Marist, the ball pulled high just before reaching the goal.

Looking to make every chance count, Temple took advantage of a poor clear out of Marist's defensive third and saw Paula Jurewicz hit a curling shot just past the outreached arms of Landsman for the walk-off golden goal at 96:58.

For the game, Marist outshot Temple 26-10, with an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Landsman finished with six saves.

Marist falls to 6-5 on the season.

The Red Foxes will be in action next weekend as they begin MAAC play with a trip to Western New York to face-off with Canisius on Friday, Sept. 28 and Niagara on Sunday, Sept. 30.
