POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Fifth-year senior wide receiver Michael Rios (Miami, Fla.) of the Marist football team has been named Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association (MNYFWA) FCS Offensive Player of the Week. On Sept. 22 against Davidson, Rios set a program record with 244 yards receiving, and tied a program record with three touchdown receptions.
Rios hauled in touchdown passes of 80, 71 and 14 yards from junior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.), and added a 34-yard reception. The performance was the first time in program history a receiver exceeded 200 yards in a game, and it was the third time a Red Fox had three receiving touchdowns in a game. It was also the first 200-yard game by a PFL receiver in four years.
Rios leads the Red Foxes with 431 yards receiving this season. For his career, he now has 1,275 receiving yards, which is good for fourth place all-time in Marist's 20-year FCS history. He also has 10 receiving touchdowns, eight of which are longer than 40 yards.
The award was the most recent in a series for Rios this week. He was also named Pioneer Football League (PFL) Offensive Player of the Week and College Sports Madness PFL Offensive Player of the Week, and he earned a College Football Performance Award as well.
Marist (2-2 overall, 1-0 PFL) returns to action on Saturday at Jacksonville (3-1, 1-0 PFL). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. The game is the only one in the PFL this week featuring two teams undefeated in league play.
