Women's Basketball Rides Defense To Easy 67-38 Win Over Loyola

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team held Loyola to just 11 first half points on its way to an easy 67-38 win Friday night at McCann Arena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game.

Elizabeth Beynnon (Burlington, Vt.) led the way for the Red Foxes with 17 points and eight rebounds and outscored the entire Loyola team for the first 30 minutes of the game. Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was also in double figures with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.), Sydney Coffey (New Hope, Minn.) and Kristina Danella (Manalapan, N.J.) all finished with seven points. Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) had an off night on offense, scoring just two points, but held Loyola's Katie Sheahin, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, scoreless on the night on 0-8 shooting. Eileen Van Horn (Waukesha, Wisc.) made her first field goal of her career, a three-pointer, and finished with a career-high five points. Suzzette Garnett (Bronx, N.Y.) scored her first point of the season on a free throw and Maggie Gallagher (Stormville, N.Y.) registered her first career assist on Van Horn's trey. The Red Foxes had their second highest rebound total of the season, grabbing 41 boards on the night, three short of their output against Boston University.

With the game tied at four after the first four minutes, Marist (8-6, 3-0 MAAC) went on a 20-4 run over the next 13 minutes to open up a 24-8 lead. The defense held Loyola (6-8, 1-2 MAAC) with just one field goal during that stretch and did not allow the Greyhounds into double digits until they hit a three-pointer with 1:13 left to bring the score to 24-11.

Danella hit a mid-range jumper off of an inbounds play with five seconds on the clock to send Marist into the locker rooms at halftime with a 26-11 lead.

The Red Foxes held Loyola to just 3-19 (15.8%) shooting in the first half and forced nine turnovers. Meanwhile, Beynnon was a perfect 6-6 from the floor for 12 points to go along with five rebounds.

The strong play continued in the second half as Marist opened on a 23-3 run over the first 10 minutes and put the game out of reach at 49-14. O'Connor scored nine of the first 13 points of the streak, including six in a row at one point. Dulin also contributed all seven of her points on two driving layups and a three-pointer. The rest of the points came on free throws by Beynnon, Ockenden and Coffey.

Over the final 10 minutes, Marist emptied its bench, again giving valuable minutes to its younger players.

The Red Foxes close out their three-game home-stand when Iona visits McCann on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest. The game is women's basketball Alumni Day and will air live in a special presentation on Rock 93.3 FM. Geoff Brault and Kristy Nix will have the call beginning at 1:45.
